This course addresses several issues. Among the issues explored include: (1) Examination of the linkage between counterterrorism and Israeli security; (2) Explores the components of Israel’s counterterrorism infrastructure, and (3) Details the triumphs, failures, and the future of Israeli counterterrorism.

Description

Counterterrorism is a critical component of Homeland Security in Israel. Unknown to most is the counterterrorism tactics proceeded the founding of the State of Israel. This course examines Israel’s controversial approach to counterterrorism. Details the linkage between what Issac Kfir describes as the oscillation “between Bitachon Yisodi (fundamental security threats) to Bitachon Shotef (continuous security)” and a description of how Israeli counterterrorism confronts the multiple threats that impact the security of the state. The course explores the vast and ever improving and expanding Israeli counterterrorism infrastructure. Finally, the course reveals the triumphs, failures, and internal efforts to improve Israeli counterterrorism to meet an expanding threat environment.

  • Comprehensive understanding of Palestinian terrorism, the role of Hezbollah and Iran and their use of terrorism against Israel. Equally significant, students will obtain a comprehensive understanding of the instruments of Israeli counterterrorism.

This lesson examines the concepts that are critical to understanding Israel’s approach to counterterrorism.

Module 2
This lesson focuses on the Israeli National Police (INP) which is an essential component of the Israel’s counterterrorism infrastructure.

Module 3
This lesson examines the role of Shin Bet (Shabak) also known as the Internal Security Agency (ISA) and this bureaucratic entity deals with the threat of domestic terrorism and political subversion.

Module 4
This lesson examines the role of Mossad in gathering intelligence and explores its active participation in covert missions against Israel.

Module 5
This lesson examines Aman and the organizations role in counterterrorism. It explores the various types of intelligence collection that is obtained by Aman and explores the multiple IDF units engaged in intelligence collection.

Module 6
This lesson examines the role of Israeli Defense Force (IDF) in counterterrorism. In addition, this lesson explores the multiple missions and the terrorist groups the IDF confronts on a daily basis.

Module 7
This lesson examines one of the IDF’s most elite special forces units, Duvdevan. Second, this lesson explores the evolution of one of the IDF’s most essential combat units.

Module 8
This lesson explores the extraordinary history of the IDF’s oldest commando unit known as Sayeret Matkal. As part of the lesson students will learn about its multiple counterterrorism missions against an assortment of terrorist groups.

Module 9
This lesson examines the successful and equally controversial counterterrorism tactic known as targeted killing.

Module 10
This lesson explores the role of the Israeli Knesset, Israel’s Parliament or legislation branch, and the consequential counterterrorism laws that were enacted by this body.

Module 11
This lesson explores a host of additional counterterrorism measures that have been implemented by Israel to disrupt, counter, and intimidate Palestinian and other terrorist groups.
