About The Course: In this comprehensive course the objective is to provide students with the information on the available U.S. presidential strategies to comprehend the evolution of the war on terrorism and its enduring impact on U.S., regional, and international security.
Course Description: Historically, the American struggle against terrorism began long before the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Similarly, while a host of U.S. presidents have dealt with the threat of terrorism, only four have called for a war on terrorism. At issue, when did the struggle begin and when did the American response to terrorism become global? This course informs students about the origins of transnational terrorism and traces the American response. With regard to the response, the course explores the dissimilar strategies that were implemented by President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, President Barack Obama, and President Donald Trump. Of particular interest, this course not only examines U.S. presidential strategies, but it explores the degree to which these approaches have contained or reduced the threat of global terrorism. security. Finally, the course closes with an assessment of the American response and the future of the war on terrorism.
What Will You Learn?
- (1) students will learn the major strategies implemented by U.S. presidents that have been created to confront transnational terrorism around the world, (2) inform students about the religious and ideological underpinnings of Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, (3) students will obtain information to evaluate the performance of the United States over the course of the war on terrorism, and (4) students at the undergraduate and graduate level may use this information for future employment.
